What is Winter Solistice
The winter solstice, also known as the hibernal solstice, occurs when one of Earth’s poles is tilted farthest away from the Sun. This event happens twice a year, once in each hemisphere (Northern and Southern). During the winter solstice, that hemisphere experiences its shortest day and longest night of the year, with the Sun reaching its lowest point in the sky at its daily peak.
This year, the winter solstice will fall on Saturday, December 21, 2024.
Many cultures celebrate the winter solstice with festivals and traditions, marking the return of longer days and the rebirth of the Sun. For example, Christmas and Hanukkah are celebrated around this time, and ancient structures like Stonehenge were built with the solstice in mind.
In many parts of the world, the winter solstice marks the official start of winter. However, the coldest days of the year usually come after the solstice, as it takes time for the Earth’s atmosphere to cool.
