Who is Marc Fogel?
Born on July 28, 1961, in Butler, Pennsylvania, Marc Hilliard Fogel is a seasoned history teacher with a career spanning several countries, including Colombia, Malaysia, Oman, Mexico, Venezuela, and Russia. Since 2012, he had been teaching at the Anglo-American School of Moscow, educating the children of diplomats and expatriates.
Arrest and Imprisonment
In August 2021, Fogel was arrested at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport after authorities discovered approximately half an ounce (about 14 grams) of medical marijuana in his luggage.
He asserted that the marijuana was legally prescribed in the United States to manage chronic back pain. Despite this, in June 2022, he was convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to 14 years in a Russian penal colony.
Advocacy and Diplomatic Efforts
Fogel’s detention did not initially receive widespread media attention. However, his family, particularly his 95-year-old mother, Malphine Fogel, tirelessly campaigned for his release.
Their efforts included meetings with U.S. lawmakers and public appeals to raise awareness about his plight.
In December 2024, the U.S. State Department officially designated Fogel as “wrongfully detained,” a status that intensified efforts to secure his freedom.
Release and Return to the United States
On February 11, 2025, Marc Fogel was released from Russian custody following diplomatic negotiations led by President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff.
Upon his return, Fogel expressed profound gratitude, stating, “I feel like the luckiest man on earth right now.” He was welcomed at the White House, where he personally thanked President Trump for facilitating his release.
